Where we started

The 5:15 problem

We started with a familiar Greensboro problem: it’s 5:15pm, you’re hungry, and every option feels like a compromise. You can drive across town for a good meal, settle for grocery store meat and a tired produce aisle, or wish there were something better closer to home.

For years, this stretch of Battleground between downtown and Westerwood, Fisher Park, and Latham Park lacked a place that truly felt like “ours.” Somewhere close enough to walk or bike, grab a meal, pick up dinner ingredients, and run into neighbors along the way.

A 20-year dream

A one-stop neighborhood butcher-bar

For Taylor Armstrong, building that place has been a lifelong vision. He grew up in Greensboro, working in kitchens and grocery meat departments, learning the craft of butchery and building menus around what was in-season.

Even back then, he was sketching versions of a butcher-plus-restaurant in his head—a neighborhood spot where you could have a great drink and meal, then walk out with something you were excited to cook at home.

ORIGINS

A family built around food

Jordan comes from an eastern North Carolina produce family—her dad is a sweet potato broker—so conversations about food, farms, and quality have always been part of her life. She’s spent years on the front-of-house side, obsessed with the small details that make a place feel like your spot.

Together, Taylor and Jordan are raising their two boys just up the road. Their oldest, Kav, already loves being in the kitchen—he’s got strong opinions about how to properly cook a hot dog and can’t wait to earn his first shift at BBB.

OUR building

Turning an old auto shop into a neighborhood hub

When the old Ready Auto & Ready Gas building at 1013 Battleground opened up, it felt like the moment to finally make the dream real.

They saw more than an empty garage—they saw the local butcher-bar, restaurant, and market they wanted for their own family and neighbors. A walkable place where you can grab a classic drink, eat something you’re actually excited about, and leave with high-quality meat and groceries for tomorrow’s dinner, without leaving your own neighborhood.

OUR philosophy

Big Slow Flavors, LOW stress

At the heart of it all is Taylor’s Big Slow Flavors philosophy: put in the time and care up front so dinner doesn’t have to feel like a chore.

If it’s in the case or on the shelves, he’s tried it, and he’d serve it to his own family. Most days, you’ll find him behind the counter turning phrases like “quick weeknight,” “kids,” or “date night” into the right cut for you—and a simple plan.

Why we built it

A place that feels like “ours”

1013 Battleground Ave Greensboro NC Building Ready Auto-Battleground Butcher Bar

Battleground Butcher Bar isn’t trying to be everything to everyone. We want to be indispensable to the neighbors who live, work, and ride around this part of Greensboro—to the families who call it home.

It’s a place where you’re recognized, where you can solve the “go out or cook at home” decision in one easy stop, and where it finally feels like this corridor got a spot that truly belongs to it.
